Hasn't been to a dentist in a while? You're welcome here.

It happens — life, fear, cost, time. We see it all the time, and we will not lecture you. Our only job is to find out where you stand and help you get healthy from there, at your pace.

Most serious dental problems are easier, cheaper, and far more comfortable to treat when they're caught early. A routine cleaning and exam every six months is the simplest, most powerful thing you can do to protect your teeth, your gums, and the rest of your health — and it's the visit Dr. Nguyen built this practice around.

01 What a cleaning visit includes

A complete preventive visit is more than "a quick polish." Here's what we do, in order, so you know what to expect.

Comprehensive exam

Dr. Nguyen checks each tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissue of your mouth — and includes an oral cancer screening. If something has changed since last visit, we'll show you.

Digital X-rays (when needed)

Low-dose digital X-rays let us see between teeth, under fillings, and around the roots — places we can't see with eyes alone. We only take them when they'll actually change your care.

Professional cleaning

Your hygienist gently removes plaque and tartar above the gumline — including the spots a toothbrush can't reach — then polishes your teeth so they feel smooth and clean.

Fluoride or sealants (if helpful)

A short fluoride treatment can strengthen enamel against cavities. Sealants — thin protective coatings — protect deep grooves on back teeth in kids and at-risk adults.

Honest, plain-language plan

Before you leave, we'll show you anything that needs attention, explain your options, and put it in writing — so you can make decisions calmly, not under pressure.

02 Regular cleaning vs. deep cleaning

These two words sound similar but are very different procedures, for different situations. Here's the honest difference.

Regular cleaning (prophylaxis)

For healthy gums

The routine cleaning most patients get every 6 months. Cleans above the gumline. Helps keep healthy mouths healthy.

  • Removes plaque and tartar above the gumline
  • Polishes the surfaces of your teeth
  • Usually one visit, about 45–60 minutes
  • Recommended every 6 months for most patients

Deep cleaning (scaling & root planing)

Treats gum disease

A treatment — not a routine — for patients with gum disease. Cleans below the gumline, where infection lives.

  • Removes bacteria and tartar below the gumline
  • Smooths the tooth roots so gums can heal
  • Usually two visits with local anesthetic for comfort
  • Followed by more frequent maintenance cleanings
One important myth: deep cleaning does not loosen teeth

This worry is common, but it's backwards. A deep cleaning doesn't loosen teeth — gum disease loosens teeth by destroying the bone and gum that hold them. The cleaning removes the cause and helps your gums tighten back up.

03 About those X-rays

A lot of patients quietly worry about radiation. It's a fair question — here's the honest answer.

Less than you might think

Modern digital X-rays use a very small dose — roughly the same as you'd get from a single day of natural background radiation from the sun and ground.

Only when they'll help

We take X-rays only when they'll actually change your care — not "just because it's six months." Healthy young adults often need fewer; patients with new pain may need more.

Protected, always

Lead aprons and thyroid collars are used for every X-ray. If you're pregnant or trying to conceive, tell us — we'll plan accordingly.

04 Preventive care for every age

Different ages, different needs. Here's roughly what we focus on at each stage.

Children & teens

Gentle exams, sealants to protect deep grooves on back teeth, fluoride when helpful, and friendly habits-building. Older kids and teens are welcome here.

Adults

Routine cleanings, gum-health checks, oral cancer screening, and early-decay catches before they become crowns. We watch for grinding, cracks, and bite changes too.

Seniors

Gum health, root surface cavities, sensitivity, and care around existing crowns, bridges, dentures, or implants. Gentle visits at your pace.

Patients with health conditions

If you have diabetes, heart conditions, or are on certain medications, your dental care may need adjusting. Tell us — we'll plan around it.

05 What we'll recommend at home

Brushing and flossing aren't fancy, but they're still the most important things you do for your teeth. The basics, done well:

Brush twice a day

Two minutes, soft bristles, fluoride toothpaste. Gentle circles — not hard scrubbing, which actually wears teeth and gums down.

Floss once a day

Floss or a water flosser — whichever you'll actually use. Plaque between teeth is what your toothbrush can't reach.

+

Less sugary & acidic drinks

Soda, sports drinks, and constant sipping of sweet coffee are quietly hard on teeth. Water is your enamel's best friend.

06 Why patients choose SoftDental for cleanings

Real exams, every visit

Dr. Nguyen examines every patient — not a quick glance from the door. You'll know what's going on with your mouth.

Low-radiation digital X-rays

Modern digital sensors mean far less radiation than older film X-rays, and we take them only when they'll help.

Three languages

Care explained clearly in English, Tiếng Việt, and Español — so nothing important gets lost in translation.

Honest, written treatment plan

If you need work, we tell you straight, prioritize what's urgent, and put it in writing — no upsell, no pressure.

Common questions

How often should I get a dental cleaning?
Most patients do well with a professional cleaning and exam every six months. Patients with gum disease or other risk factors may benefit from more frequent visits. We'll recommend a schedule based on what your mouth actually needs.
It's been years since my last dentist visit. Will you judge me?
No. We see this all the time and we won't lecture you. Our only job is to figure out where you stand and help you get healthy from there — at your pace. The hardest part of coming back is making the appointment; we'll handle the rest.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Modern digital X-rays use a very small amount of radiation — roughly the same as you'd get from a day of natural background radiation. We only take X-rays when they'll actually change your care, and we use lead aprons and thyroid collars every time.
What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar above the gumline — that's the routine visit for healthy mouths. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is a treatment for gum disease — it cleans below the gumline where infection lives. They're different procedures for different situations.
Do you treat children?
Yes — older children and teens are welcome here. For very young children needing a pediatric specialist, we'll happily help you find the right care.
My gums bleed when I brush — is that normal?
No, it usually isn't. Healthy gums don't typically bleed with normal brushing and flossing. Bleeding gums are often the earliest sign of gum disease — and the earliest stage is very treatable. Worth getting checked.
