A Promise on the Water
The first day at sea was calm. Thirteen-year-old Minh Nguyen, alone on a small fishing boat fleeing Vietnam, thought maybe they would make it. Then the storm came. He looked down and saw the waves rise up, tall as a three-story building. He was scared. He grabbed the deck and prayed:
“God, I don’t want to die. But if you let me live, I’ll do something. I’ll help people.”
He lived.
From the Sea to a New Life
He arrived in the United States in 1979 with nothing — no family, listed simply as an orphan. He went to school instead of giving up. At St. Thomas High School in Houston, he graduated an honor student, earning awards in English, math, theology, and history.
A merit scholarship sent him to Texas A&M, where he studied Biology, made the Dean’s List four years running, and still found time to tutor, to read for the blind, and to lead the Vietnamese American Student Association. In 1989 he entered the nation’s top dental school, in San Antonio. He was named one of its Top Ten students, researched osteoporosis, served his country as a Public Health officer, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1993.

A Life of Service
Since then, Dr. Nguyen has practiced as a laser, cosmetic, and family dentist in Houston, earning a place among America’s Top Dentists. He trained further in oral surgery, sedation, and cardiac life support — always learning, because love for his patients demands his very best.

A Second Calling
But the promise made on that boat had a second answer waiting. In December 2024, he earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from the University of St. Thomas. On February 14, 2025, in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo laid hands on him and ordained him a deacon of the Catholic Church. The vow — I’ll help people — turned out to be totally different from what he imagined. And he is glad.

— In Dr. Nguyen’s own words —
The Art of Healing
A patient-first reflection on dentistry, service, and the art of healing.
In my office, the patient comes first. Not the tooth — the person. Scripture says our body is “a temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor 6:19). So when someone sits in my chair, I am not just looking at a cavity. I am looking at someone God loves.
Long ago, in the Book of Acts, the early Church had a problem. Widows were going hungry because no one was watching over the daily meal. The apostles could not do everything — preach and serve tables too. So they chose seven men, “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3), to care for these simple, practical needs. One of them was Stephen. Scripture says he was “full of faith and power, and did great wonders” (Acts 6:8) — not despite the humble work, but through it.
I am a permanent deacon of the Catholic Church. At church, I serve at the altar and proclaim the Word of God. I baptize the children. I marry the couples. I bury the dead. At the nursing home, I sit with the old and the forgotten, and tend to what they carry in their hearts. In my office, I serve at another table — the dental chair, where the needs of the body are met. I do not see these as different jobs. I see them as one calling, lived out in many rooms.

So before I touch a tooth, I listen. I want to know your fears, your worries, your story — not just your x-rays. Only then do I diagnose, plan, and treat — always gently, always with care for your whole body, never just the part that hurts.
I keep learning, because love for my patients demands my best skill, not just my best intentions. And when a case is beyond me, I say so, and I send you to someone who can help. My team is chosen the same way the apostles chose their seven — not just for skill, but for kindness and good heart.
A filled tooth. A calmed fear. A patient treated like they matter. Small things, maybe. But I believe heaven counts them too.
This is the art of healing.
This is my calling.
The boy who once survived the sea alone has spent his life since making sure no one else feels alone — in body, or in spirit.
